由來與發展
ain't，它原本是美國南部一幫文盲、粗人（但非原住民）說的話，現在趨于普遍，并且已經收入到了各類詞典當中。最開始它是am not的縮寫，最初寫作amn't，後由于發音連讀問題（省去前一個輔音m，隻發後一個輔音n），以訛傳訛地變成了ain't，顯然，這是由一個be動詞am和一個否定詞not組成的，所以原則上隻适用于任何am not的縮寫情況。
在英國，ain't一般隻用工人階級，比如那些說倫敦方言，通常被認為是不正當的。中産階級和上流社會，與19世紀的英國，樂意使用在熟悉的演講和中上層階級的教育。
很少被發現在正式寫作中，它經常被使用在更多的非正式書面文字，例如流行歌曲的歌詞。

查爾斯·狄更斯（Charles Dickens）在作品中使用ain't，如他1838年的小說《霧都孤兒》中寫道："...see what a pride they take in their profession, my dear. Ain't it beautiful?"
