由來與發展
ain't,它原本是美國南部一幫文盲、粗人(但非原住民)說的話,現在趨于普遍,并且已經收入到了各類詞典當中。最開始它是am not的縮寫,最初寫作amn't,後由于發音連讀問題(省去前一個輔音m,隻發後一個輔音n),以訛傳訛地變成了ain't,顯然,這是由一個be動詞am和一個否定詞not組成的,所以原則上隻适用于任何am not的縮寫情況。
在英國,ain't一般隻用工人階級,比如那些說倫敦方言,通常被認為是不正當的。中産階級和上流社會,與19世紀的英國,樂意使用在熟悉的演講和中上層階級的教育。
很少被發現在正式寫作中,它經常被使用在更多的非正式書面文字,例如流行歌曲的歌詞。

查爾斯·狄更斯(Charles Dickens)在作品中使用ain't,如他1838年的小說《霧都孤兒》中寫道:"...see what a pride they take in their profession, my dear. Ain't it beautiful?"
