劇情簡介
公路巡邏隊為了追捕夜晚騎士惡徒損失慘重，後來麥斯出面，由于車速過高，惡徒煞車不及，撞直汽油爆炸身死，其飛車黨夥伴誓言報複，巡邏隊員古士與歌舞女郎幽會時，其機車被飛車黨破壞，古士最後被焚，慘死于翻覆車中。麥斯的妻子遭飛車黨首調戲未果，匪首恨而欲置麥斯妻潔茜于死地，在麥與潔旅遊路上，一直緊追不舍，到麥與潔寄宿的海濱農莊，潔茜被匪徒撞傷于路中，其子亦慘死，麥憤而重披巡邏隊衣，展開報複之旅，而一一将惡徒伏誅。

角色介紹
在不遠的未來，公路騎士們在道路上肆虐，所過之處留下瘋狂破壞的痕迹。為了追逐盜取了警用車的“黑暗騎士”，警方付出了重大代價，幸有比騎士更加瘋狂的麥克斯（梅爾·吉布森 Mel Gibson飾）出場，迫使黑暗騎士車禍身亡。黑暗騎士的同夥們發誓報仇，他們降臨小鎮，要接回黑暗騎士的屍身，并且肆意淩虐弱者，麥克斯和搭檔古斯（Steve Bisle 飾）抓獲兇手後，卻因為無人敢指認，隻得容忍他們繼續逍遙法外。古斯被公路騎士們抓到，身負重傷，而麥克斯的妻子傑西（瓊妮·薩缪爾 Joanne Samuel飾）也被他們恐吓騷擾，有“瘋狂”之稱的麥克斯不再隐忍，向騎士們展開回擊……
幕後制作
從表面上看不過是一部暴力和飙車場面充斥并有個英俊男主角的精彩動作片。起初沒有人料到這部小成本澳大利亞電影會如此成功，以至成為描繪世紀末另類英雄人物的典範作品。米勒是個風格獨特的導演，正如吉布森所說：“他是個非常棒的電影人，他不隻是個導演，而且是個出色的藝術家。”本片是一部以未來為時代背景的科幻片，那時的世界十分荒涼且資源貧乏，殺人已經不是什麼新鮮事。公路上時有飛車黨搶劫燃料運輸車，警員們既要和劫匪拼殺又要承受環境帶來的巨大壓力。吉布森對自己角色的評價是：“邁克斯雖然是個殺人成性的人物，但他有嚴格的道德準則。”本片之所以能夠跻身一流影片之列，主要是因為它成功地營造了一個荒涼的暴力世界，并充滿雄性的瘋狂侵略性。盡管當年該片在美國上映時并不被注意，但其它國家的影迷對它十分着迷。
