故事梗概
巴黎郊外，一位性感女郎的車在路邊抛錨了，她以撩人的姿勢攔截下一輛卡車請求搭載。對于司機來說，這似乎是一次小小的豔遇，沒想到他引來的竟然是血光之災，其殘缺的屍體令人慘不忍睹。
這位叫可爾的女郎是醫生萊奧的妻子。醫生發現妻子渾身鮮血地坐在屍體旁，他慌忙掩埋了屍體，并将有可怕的食人嗜好的可爾囚禁在有栅欄的房子裡。但兩名竊賊的闖入又引來可爾大開殺戒。
另一邊，美國某藥物公司代表辛和新婚燕爾的妻子朱爾來到巴黎度蜜月，但他們的旅行似乎并不浪漫愉快。朱爾發現丈夫對自己十分冷淡，不願與她親熱，甚至她三番五次地主動表示也無濟于事。其實辛内心正備受煎熬，他有一種古怪而恐怖的病——他曾經與同學萊奧一起進行一項實驗，試圖制成一種刺激人性欲的藥。
而萊奧讓他服下了試驗品，沒想到這種藥物有着巨大到駭人的刺激作用，它使得服用者在亢奮時必須食人、吸血方能獲得滿足。辛面對愛妻，隻能極力抑制住内心的欲望。但他的行迹已經引來了妻子的懷疑，尤其是衣服上的血迹更讓朱爾疑慮。
其實辛此次來巴黎另有一個秘密目的，就是找到制藥的萊奧以治好自己的病。據他了解萊奧正在巴黎一個研究小組繼續當年的課題。但他找到那裡時，才得知萊奧因為其過于極端的實驗被開除了。他一路追蹤到萊奧在郊外的家，發現了被關在房子裡的可爾。顯然和他一樣為嗜血狂的可爾也是萊奧的實驗品。
辛和可爾究竟該如何擺脫這血淋淋的噩夢呢？

這是一部将情感體驗推至極緻的電影。一種虛構的熱帶病毒，将男女之間相愛相殘的真相赤裸裸地表現出來，将人類同類相食的潛意識欲望徹底地暴露。但影片并不是通過情節來表達主題的。克萊爾·丹尼斯是一個很善于在無故事性的情境中營造形式力量的導演。她對身體的迷戀傳達出一種高度抑制的欲念。影片在一種高度的形式感的鏡頭運用中，制造一種強烈的生理反應的氛圍。
在影片在2001年的戛納國際電影節中首次放映的時候，曾有觀衆當場昏倒。但影片的影像魅力卻是不容置疑的。克萊爾·丹尼斯以一種無法辨别性别的視點控制着影片，雖然卡拉在影片中形象與《簡愛》中伯莎·梅森的形象極為相似，但無論是肖恩（理性）還是卡拉（感性）都無法對抗人類無法治愈的未知莫名的瘋狂情欲。
