和相恋多年的女友Justine Frischmann分手事件深刻影响了Damon Albarn创作这张专辑。专辑名"13"取自Damon的录音室名，部分曲目在那里录制。
备选的专辑名称包括"Blue"和"When You're Walking Backwards To Hell, No One Can See You, Only God". "Tender"被形容为"太空摇滚福音曲"，伦敦社区福音唱诗班和Blur一起演绎了此歌。
