江湖中，兩個武林世家的争鬥綿延數百年，直到其中的悲笛家出現了一位刀法高超的武士（張東健 飾），他血洗敵方鏟除了自己師父（狄龍 飾）的心頭大患，殺戮之後的武士選擇歸隐，他帶着敵人家最後血脈的一個嬰兒，在師父為了懲罰其背叛而派遣的層層追兵中遠赴美國西部。
在荒涼的西部小鎮，武士繼承了朋友的洗衣店，封印了刀鞘的武士開始努力融入普通人的生活，當地馬戲團的飛刀女郎琳恩（凱特•波茨沃斯 Kate Bosworth 飾）被匪幫殺害了雙親，大難不死的姑娘從此苦練飛刀試圖報仇，相似的昔日經曆讓武士和琳恩變得親近，教授琳恩功夫也成了武士勞作之餘最主要的活動。不久，匪幫再次侵襲這個小鎮，在武士的組織下，昔日的神槍手羅納德（傑弗裡•拉什 Geoffrey Rush 飾）等居民準備與匪幫決一死戰。而武士恩師親自帶隊的追殺集團，也在全速向這裡趕來……
